George Town

Give George Town two to three nights for hawker food and the UNESCO shophouse core; it is Malaysia's best-value food city and rewards slow, on-foot wandering.

George Town is the capital of Penang state, on an island off Malaysia's northwest coast connected to the mainland by two bridges and a ferry. Its historic core, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008, mixes Chinese clan houses, Peranakan shophouses, mosques and colonial buildings within walking distance of each other. Hawker food is the main draw — char kway teow, asam laksa and hokkien mee stalls that locals argue over — alongside a well-known street-art scene painted onto the old walls since 2012.

The heritage core is compact and walkable but shadeless at midday; a free CAT shuttle bus loops the centre. Grab and trishaws cover longer hops, and a short ferry or the Penang Bridge links to the mainland for day trips.

Language

Malay is the national language, written in Latin script; English is the second language of business and widely spoken. Chinese Malaysians speak Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka and Mandarin; Indian Malaysians speak Tamil. In Sabah and Sarawak indigenous languages add more.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Many famous stalls close one fixed day a week and sell out by early afternoon: check hours before crossing town for one dish.
  • Pavements in the old core are narrow, uneven and shared with motorbikes: watch your footing and check both ways before stepping off a kerb.
  • Some heritage houses (Blue Mansion, Khoo Kongsi) charge entry and run guided-tour time slots only: book or check ahead rather than turning up.
  • Petty theft from café tables and unattended bags happens in busy tourist streets: keep bags in view.
