Galle is a port city on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, built around a 17th-century Dutch fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site, on an earlier Portuguese fortification. Cafes, guesthouses and shops fill the walled town, and the ramparts give a sunset walk. Beaches like Unawatuna and Jungle Beach lie a short ride away on either side. The expressway and coastal train make it easy to reach from Colombo, so it works for two nights with a beach day.

Getting around

The fort is entirely walkable. Three-wheelers reach nearby beaches (Rs 700-1,500, 2026 estimate, check) and ride apps operate in the area; the coastal train from Colombo Fort takes about 2-2.5 h with a cheap second-class fare, and the Southern Expressway cuts the road trip to about 1.5-2 h by taxi or intercity bus (about Rs 900-1,500).

Safety

Galle is generally safe for visitors; the main risks are sea conditions during the monsoon, touts and pickpockets in crowds.
  • Swimming can be dangerous in rough monsoon-season seas (May-Sep) and rip currents; swim only on lifeguarded beaches.
  • Touts near the main fort entrance and clock tower push guided tours and shops: agree nothing on the spot if you do not want it.
  • Agree three-wheeler fares before riding, or use a ride app; meters are not consistently used.
  • December and early January are peak season: fort hotels fill up and prices rise sharply.
  • Whale-watching and turtle-hatchery trips vary widely in welfare; check operator reviews before booking.
  • Sun is strong on the ramparts and beaches: bring water and cover up.
