  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Fort Mill sits on I-77 just inside South Carolina, about 25–35 min by car from Uptown Charlotte. Almost everything worth doing is outdoors or family-oriented: the Anne Springs Close Greenway trails, the historic Main Street block, peach stands and the Carowinds amusement park on the state line. It works as a cheap, quiet base for Charlotte or as a half-day stop on the way to Rock Hill.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the town is spread out and the commuter bus (CATS 82x) runs one way in the morning and back in the late afternoon, with a stop far from the sights. Cycling is legal but routes are limited to residential streets. Rideshare covers short hops within town.

Watch out

Safety

A low-risk suburban town; the real issues are highway traffic on I-77, summer heat on exposed trails and leaving valuables visible in parked cars at trailheads.
  • Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms with strong wind and hail; plan trails for the morning.
  • The CATS 82x commuter bus is commuter-only and does not work for sightseeing.
  • Carowinds is seasonal and its entrance is across the state line at I-77 exit 90 — check the calendar before you drive up.
  • Prices at hotels rise on race and festival weekends in the Charlotte area.
