Alma is a Gratiot County town of about 9,300 people on US-127, halfway between Lansing and Mount Pleasant, and it leans hard into a Scottish identity built around Alma College. There is no rail station and no commercial airport, so you arrive by car or by intercity bus. Plan one night for the downtown, the riverwalk and the college campus, or two if you want a half-day on the Pine River by canoe. The Highland Festival in late May is the one date that fills the town.

Getting around

Alma is a driving town: US-127 and M-46 cross here and almost everything has a car park. Downtown, the college and the riverwalk sit within about 2.5 miles of each other and the Riverwalk plus the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail make the core walkable and bikeable. Dial-A-Ride Transit (DART) covers Alma and neighbouring St. Louis for people without a car; check current hours and booking rules before you rely on it.

Watch out

Safety

Alma is a low-crime small town and the main risks are practical: winter road ice, deer on US-127 at dusk, and unlit stretches of the riverwalk after dark. Lock your car and keep to lit blocks downtown at night.
  • No passenger rail: the lines through town are freight, apart from occasional summer excursion trains.
  • Winter driving on US-127 and M-46 is the real hazard: ice, snow squalls and whiteouts between December and March.
  • Small-town hours: many downtown kitchens close early and some shut on Sundays or Mondays — check before you drive in.
  • Festival weekend in late May books out the few local rooms; reserve weeks ahead or sleep in Mount Pleasant or Lansing.
