Go for one night in May for the Betuwe orchards in bloom, or in September for Appelpop; skip the city itself if you only have a week.
Tiel is the largest town in the Betuwe fruit belt, on the Waal between Utrecht and Nijmegen. The compact old centre has a rebuilt water gate, a Gothic church and a car-free shopping core, but the real reason to come is the surrounding orchard landscape in bloom and the free Appelpop festival in September. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop or a single night, not a base.

Getting around
Walk the centre; it is small and car-free around the Waterstraat. For the orchards and river dikes, rent a bike in town. Trains run every 30 min to Utrecht and to Geldermalsen, with a slower connection to Arnhem via Elst. Buses (mostly Arriva) cover Druten, Rhenen, Wageningen, Culemborg and Nieuwegein.
