Lightning Ridge is an opal-mining town in northwestern New South Wales, about 75 km north of Walgett on a sealed road. Mining and tourism now run side by side: galleries and opal shops line Morilla and Opal streets, and out-of-town sights sit among active claims. Two nights covers the town centre on foot plus one day by car or tour; one night only works if you arrive early and leave late.

Getting around
There is no public transport and no taxi service. The town centre is walkable — club, galleries, cafés, pool and bore baths are close together. The mining areas and out-of-town sights (Grawin, Glengarry, Chambers of the Black Hand, the Car Door Explorer routes) need a car or a booked half-day or full-day tour. The Bowling Club runs a transfer for patrons and many motels pick up guests.

Safety
- Open mine shafts are everywhere off the sealed roads: keep to marked routes and keep children close.
- Summer heat is dangerous — plan indoor or underground activities in the middle of the day and carry water.
- Avoid driving at dusk or after dark: kangaroos and other animals on the road.
- Bore water from the taps is safe but tastes bad; drink rainwater or bottled water.
- Fossicking is only allowed where the Visitor Information Centre says it is — never wander onto a mining lease uninvited.
