Punakaiki
Stay one night, not two: the Pancake Rocks walk takes 20–30 min, and the Pororari and Truman tracks fill a half-day. Two nights only if you walk the Paparoa Track.
Punakaiki is a village of a few dozen buildings on State Highway 6, between Westport and Greymouth, and the gateway to Paparoa National Park. Almost everyone stops for the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes at Dolomite Point; the reason to sleep here rather than push on is the Pororari River valley and the coastal forest tracks, which need a morning or an afternoon. Buses stop once a day in each direction, so a car or a booked shuttle decides your schedule.

Getting around
There is no public transport inside the village: walk the short stretches and drive for everything else. State Highway 6 is the only road, so a car, campervan or booked shuttle is the practical way to reach the trailheads. InterCity and East West coaches stop once a day in each direction and often pause 15 minutes at the Pancake Rocks.

Watch out
Safety
- West Coast rain is heavy and sudden: carry a rain jacket on every walk, even a short one.
- The Truman Track stairway down to the beach has been closed for safety since 2019; the track itself is open.
- One-lane bridges and narrow, winding sections on State Highway 6: allow more time than the distance suggests.
- Cell coverage is patchy north and south of the village; download maps and track notes before you drive.
- Sandflies are bad in damp bush and near the river mouth: repellent is worth packing.
