Armutlu is a small resort on the south coast of the Armutlu Peninsula, looking over the Gulf of Gemlik, about two hours by ferry from Istanbul. It is known for hot springs, olive groves and a low-key summer beach scene rather than for sights. The town splits into three parts: İskele by the ferry pier, the old village (Merkez/Köy) 1 km uphill, and the İhlas resort 5 km west. Most travellers use it as a one- or two-night break on the way to Bursa or Yalova, and İDO ferries do not call here every day, so check the timetable before you build a plan around it.

Getting around

Minibuses (some run by the Belediye, some private) link the harbour, the village and İhlas, and occasionally run up to the spring source; they are infrequent, so ask your hotel for times. Roads inside town are paved but narrow and often unmarked, and the İhlas–village road has no sidewalk. A car makes the peninsula villages and Gemlik easy; without one you are limited to the town and the beach.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet resort town and generally safe; the real risks are the sea (no lifeguards on most stretches), unlit roads with no sidewalk, and summer heat. Use 112 for everything.
  • Most İDO ferries from Istanbul go direct to Mudanya or Güzelyalı and do not call at Armutlu: check the sailing list for your date before booking.
  • Buses from Istanbul and Ankara usually mean a change at Gemlik, where five buses a day run up the peninsula.
  • The Armutlu 'bus station' is a scrum of minibuses in the town centre, not a terminal with signs.
  • The İhlas–village road is rough and has no sidewalk; walk it with care after dark.
  • Mobile data is reliable on Turkcell; other carriers are patchy here.
  • Some spa hotels here have erratic cleanliness for the price: read recent reviews before you commit.
