Rautalampi is a small North Savonia parish village, population about 3,400, sitting where several lakes meet. Its wooden church is one of the largest in northern Europe, and Southern Konnevesi National Park starts about 7 km away at Konnekoski. There is no railway station and buses run only on the main roads, so a car or a bike decides what you actually see. Most travellers give it one night, or use it as a quiet base between Kuopio and Jyväskylä.

Getting around
Buses serve only the main roads, so plan around a car or a rented bike for anything outside the village centre. Taxis can be booked through the Valopilkku and 02 Taksi apps. In summer the lakes are a real transport network for boats and canoes; the navigable Rautalampi waterway passes through Kiesimä, Kerkonkoski and Vaajasalmi, and the parish village itself is reachable by canoe from Konnekoski and Vaajasalmi.
