Veliky Ustyug is a merchant town of the Russian North, at the meeting point of the Sukhona and Yug rivers, with a dense set of 17th- and 18th-century churches in the northern Baroque style. It is hard to reach and seasonal: winter brings families to the Ded Moroz estate, summer brings people for the architecture and the rivers. Two nights covers the centre on foot; the estate needs its own half-day.

The centre is walkable: cathedral courtyard, embankment and museums sit within about 20 minutes on foot. A few local bus routes run, paid to the driver, with route 1 linking the bus station (PATП) to the centre and the shipyard. Taxis cover the estate and the airport. In winter, ice and snow make pavements slow.

- The town is far from Moscow and the last road stretch from Chekshino is rough: allow a full day by car or take the train/bus combination.
- Outside winter there is no direct train: you transfer at Kotlas or Yadrikha to bus or taxi.
