  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

West Palm Beach is the working downtown on the mainland side of the Intracoastal, across the bridge from the wealthier town of Palm Beach. Most travellers use it as a 2-night base between Miami and Orlando, or as a winter escape with a car. The airport is 5 minutes from downtown, the beach is a short drive, and the Norton Museum of Art is free.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the easiest way: the city is on a grid, I-95 and the Florida Turnpike run through it, and downtown is about 2 miles from the airport. Without a car, use Palm Tran buses, the free Ride WPB shuttle between the station, Brightline and downtown, and Tri-Rail or Brightline for Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton. Taxis and rideshares are available but not cheap.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Palm Beach island

go

Door to door: About 15–20 min

Drive or rideshare over the Royal Park or Southern bridge, about 10 min

Worth Avenue shops, the Flagler Museum and the lake trail; parking is limited and pricey.

Boca Raton

go

Door to door: About 30–45 min

Tri-Rail or Brightline south, or I-95 by car

Good for a half-day of shopping and the beach; trains run roughly hourly.

Delray Beach

go

Door to door: About 40–50 min

Tri-Rail to Delray Beach station, then a short walk or rideshare

Atlantic Avenue restaurants and a walkable beach; easy without a car.

Lake Worth Beach

go

Door to door: About 25–35 min

Drive or Tri-Rail to Lake Worth, then a rideshare

Casual beach and pier, lower prices than Palm Beach.

Jupiter

go

Door to door: About 35–45 min

I-95 north by car

Lighthouse, inlet and beaches; a car makes this much easier.

Riviera Beach

caution

Door to door: About 20–30 min

I-95 north by car, or bus along US-1

Marina and Peanut Island are the draw; some blocks are rough after dark.

North Palm Beach

go

Door to door: About 25–35 min

I-95 north by car

Quiet base with a county park and easy beach access.

Lion Country Safari

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Drive west on Southern Blvd, about 20 miles

Drive-through safari park; allow 2–3 h and go early.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / Clematis Street

Walk to restaurants, the waterfront and the Kravis Center; 5–10 min drive to the airport. Best for a car-free 2 nights.

CityPlace / Rosemary Square area

Shopping, hotels and the Norton Museum within walking distance; quiet at night.

Palm Beach island (across the bridge)

Resorts and Worth Avenue boutiques; 10–15 min from downtown, much higher prices.

Airport / Belvedere Road corridor

Chain hotels at lower rates; you need a car or rideshare for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown and the beach areas are generally safe in daylight and busy at night. Use normal city sense after dark, keep to lit blocks around Clematis Street and the station, and treat hurricane-season forecasts seriously.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, with the highest risk Sep–Oct: check forecasts and know your hotel's refund policy.
  • Summer heat and humidity are real: plan indoor stops midday and carry water.
  • Some Palm Beach beaches are private; use public access points with lifeguards and obey the flag warnings (red = dangerous surf, purple = dangerous sea life).
  • Parking near the beach and downtown fills on winter weekends; arrive before 10:00 or pay for a garage.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for PBI: last Tri-Rail and bus 44 times, rideshare fallback, late-arrival rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Clematis Street, the waterfront and Kravis Center, the Norton and CityPlace, the airport corridor.
  3. Place pages with verified hours and free days (Norton Museum, Flagler Museum, Kravis Center) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Storm and heat fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
