Kuala Tembeling

Use Kuala Tembeling as the boat launch to Taman Negara, not a destination: arrive by 8:30 AM for the 9 AM boat, or by 1:30 PM for the 2 PM boat (2:30 PM Friday). One night only if you miss both boats.

Kuala Tembeling is a small riverside jetty 20 minutes from Jerantut. Almost everyone passes through to catch the 2-hour boat upriver into Taman Negara. The settlement itself has no sights, one or two basic eateries and a handful of simple lodgings. Plan your arrival around the two daily boats and treat it as a transit point.

Watch out

Safety

Kuala Tembeling is very safe. The main risks are the boat ride (no life jackets always worn — check) and the heat on the river. Keep valuables dry in a waterproof bag.
  • Only two boats daily: 9 AM and 2 PM (2:30 PM Friday). Miss them and you wait until the next day.
  • The boat is a narrow wooden longboat with no shade; bring water, sunscreen and a hat.
  • No ATM in Kuala Tembeling; bring enough ringgit for the boat fare (RM 50 per person) and any food or lodging.
  • Phone signal is weak or absent on the river; download maps and messages before you leave.
