Jefferson City

Give it one full day: the Capitol, the old penitentiary tour and the riverfront are all walkable from downtown. Sleep one night, or use it as a stop on the Amtrak line.

Jefferson City is Missouri's capital, halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City on the Missouri River, with about 43,000 people. Almost everything worth seeing sits in a compact downtown: the 1917 Capitol, the decommissioned state penitentiary, the old river landing and a handful of small museums. It is a one-day city, best paired with the Katy Trail or an Amtrak stop on the Missouri River Runner.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown sights are walkable. Elsewhere you need a car: US-50, US-54 and US-63 meet here, and there is no useful local bus for visitors (check). A 7.4-mile paved greenway runs through town and links to the Katy Trail over the Missouri River pedestrian bridge.

Watch out

Safety

Jefferson City is a small capital with normal US small-city risk: fine downtown in daylight, quieter after dark. Lock the car, keep to lit streets, and drive if you are staying out on the highway strips.
  • Summer is hot and humid; plan indoor stops in the middle of the day.
  • Some state sites close in December, and the Governor's Mansion stops tours in August and December.
  • Penitentiary tours are guided and sell out; book ahead on the official site.
  • Downtown empties after dark on weeknights; stick to lit streets and drive if you are outside the centre.
