Tarsus is a working Çukurova city of about 630,000 people, industrial and flat, with a compact old centre of Roman and Ottoman fragments. Its pull for visitors from abroad is St Paul, born here around 5 AD; the antiquities themselves take half a day, not a week. Çukurova Airport (COV) sits 15 km east and now serves the region that Adana's old airport handled.

Getting around

The main sights sit within walking distance of Merkez square. You need a taxi or dolmuş for the waterfall in the north suburbs and for the otogar 5 km east. No trains on the Adana–Tarsus–Mersin line until 2026 while a tunnel and airport spur are built.

Watch out

Safety

Tarsus is a normal Turkish city and safe for visitors by day; the usual cautions apply at night, and the heat in July and August is the real hazard.
  • The waterfall is a trickle most of the year: the Berdan Dam upstream takes the flow, so go only after heavy rain.
  • Summer heat on the plain is severe; walk the sights before 11:00 or after 16:00.
  • The otogar is 5 km east of the centre: allow a dolmuş or taxi ride on both ends.
  • Inter-city buses use the E982 bypass north of town, not the centre.
