Muonio is a small fell municipality on the Muonionjoki river, at the crossroads of the E8 and road 79, with about 2,300 residents. It is not a resort town: the village is a service stop, and the reasons to sleep here are the Olos and Pallas slopes, the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, and winter aurora nights. Most travellers pass through by car or coach between Kolari, Kittilä and the Norwegian border.

Getting around

There is no local public transport in Muonio. The village is walkable, but Olos, Pallas, Jeris and the trailheads need a car, a taxi or a shared taxi booked at least 24 hours ahead. Long-distance coaches on the E8 and road 79 stop in the village; check Matkahuolto timetables. In winter, drive with winter tyres and headlights on.

Road 79 east, then road 957 north; about 32 km by car. Daily coaches run in peak season.

Finland's most visited national park. Taivaskero fell (807 m) has a trail from Hotel Pallas and the visitor centre.

About 20 km east, by lakes. Cabin villages with aurora domes; quiet, car needed.

Harriniva

500 m south of the Swedish border crossing, by the Muonionjoki rapids. Hotel, camping and restaurant.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are winter driving on icy roads, short daylight, and long distances with no phone signal: carry a charged phone, tell someone your route, and do not rely on buses after dark.
  • No local buses: without a car, book taxis or the shared taxi in advance.
  • Distances are long: Pallas is about 30 km and Pakasaivo about 80 km from the village.
  • The road to Pakasaivo is not maintained in winter.
  • The Olos hotel and several services close for the summer season.
  • Winter daylight is short: plan drives before dark and check road conditions.
  • Do not light fires at the Valkeajoki hut stove; the spring behind it is radioactive.
