Boyle is a market town of about 2,900 people in north County Roscommon, at the foot of the Curlew Mountains and the edge of Lough Key. Trains from Dublin take about 2 h 30 min and continue to Sligo, so it works as a car-free stop. King House, a ruined Cistercian abbey and the forest park on the lough are the reasons to get off the train; the town itself is small and quiet, and you need a car or the seasonal shuttle to reach the lough and the dolmen.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 10 minutes; the railway station is 400 m south of it. For Lough Key, the dolmen and the Curlew Pass statue you need a car, or the Park Ranger Shuttle Bus between the town, the marina and the forest park, which runs June–October with three trips a day. Local Link Bus 570 links Boyle with Roscommon via Strokestown, and Bus 571 runs twice Monday–Saturday to Keadue and Arigna.

Watch out

Safety

Boyle is a low-crime rural town and safe to walk at night; the real risks are narrow roads with no footpath, wet surfaces on the trails, and seasonal closures that strand you without a plan B.
  • Many sights are seasonal: King House and Boyle Abbey open April–October only, and the Douglas Hyde centre opens July–August on Saturdays.
  • Drumanone Dolmen sits on private land behind a level crossing; ask before crossing and leave gates as you find them.
  • Castle Island's ruins on Lough Key are unsafe to enter; view them from a boat.
  • Rural roads such as the R294 are narrow with few passing places and almost no parking at trailheads.
