Terrace is the service hub of northwestern British Columbia, about 12,000 people on the Skeena River between Prince Rupert and Smithers. It is not a sightseeing town: the draw is Kitselas Canyon's 5,000-year Tsimshian history, a small heritage museum, Skeena steelhead fishing and Shames Mountain powder in winter. Most travellers pass through on the VIA Rail Skeena train or Highway 16, and one night covers it.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable. BC Transit runs local routes Monday to Saturday, plus route 11 to Kitimat (about 1 h 5 min) with some trips stopping at the airport. Taxis handle evenings and the airport run. A car is needed for Kitselas Canyon, Shames Mountain and anything outside town.

Tsimshian village sites and canyon above the Skeena; check access and any guided-tour times before you drive out.

An industrial port town with a fjord setting; go only if you have a reason, and check the return bus times.

Watch out

Safety

Terrace is a small northern town and generally safe for visitors; the real risks are winter driving, rain and distance, plus wildlife on trails. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
  • Winter driving on Highway 16 and Highway 37 is not for drivers without northern mountain experience: snow, ice and long gaps between services.
  • October to February are the wettest months; pack for rain, not for a dry cold snap.
  • Fuel and food gaps are real on Highway 37 north; fill up in Terrace before heading out.
  • Bear country: store food properly and make noise on trails.
