  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Coeur d'Alene is the largest city in Northern Idaho and the eastern edge of the Spokane metro, on Interstate 90 and on Pacific Time, not Mountain Time. The draw is a big freshwater lake with a public beach and the Tubbs Hill loop, plus a walkable downtown of shops and restaurants. Two nights covers it in summer; one night is enough in the shoulder season. Ski hills and the Silver Valley mining towns sit within an hour's drive, so many travellers use the city as a first or last stop on a Northern Idaho loop.

Watch out

Safety

Coeur d'Alene is a low-crime city for its size and the tourist core feels safe day and night. The real risks are cold lake water, summer wildfire smoke, winter mountain passes and leaving valuables visible in a parked car at trailheads.
  • Summer weekends fill the lakefront hotels: book weeks ahead.
  • August can bring wildfire smoke that closes trails and ruins lake views.
  • Lake water stays cold well into June; the beach is busiest Jul–Aug.
  • Winter driving over Fourth of July Pass and Lookout Pass needs snow tyres or chains — check Idaho road conditions before you leave.
  • The city sits on Pacific Time, unlike most of Idaho: an hour earlier than Boise and Sun Valley.
