Laiza

Skip unless you have a specific reason (Kachin culture, border trade) and have secured a permit beyond Myitkyina. Half a day covers the market and a meal.

Laiza is a Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) border town that grew from a village after the 1994 ceasefire. It offers a glimpse of Kachin life, Chinese goods, and local food, but reaching it requires a permit, two checkpoints, and a long drive from Myitkyina. Most travellers skip it.

Watch out

Safety

Laiza is in KIA-controlled territory. The main risk is the changing political situation and military checkpoints. Read your government's travel advice for Myanmar before planning any trip.
  • Foreigners need a special permit to go beyond the Balamintin Bridge near Myitkyina.
  • Two checkpoints before and after the bridge, one at Waimaw, one at Laja Yang, and a combined checkpoint at the town entrance.
  • The ruling junta demands the handover of Laiza; the security situation can change quickly.
  • No official tourist infrastructure; bring cash (kyat or Chinese yuan).
