Honfleur

Give Honfleur one night, two at most: the old harbour, Sainte-Catherine and the Boudin museum fill a day, then use it as a base for the Normandy coast.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • France and Monaco ↗France has run temporary identity checks at its internal Schengen land borders since 2015; carry a passport or EU/EEA national ID on trains and buses from Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
  • France and Monaco ↗Nights in France and Monaco draw on the same Schengen 90-in-180-day allowance as the rest of the area; Monaco does not reset or pause it.
  • France ↗France is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors' fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • France ↗TGV (including the low-cost Ouigo) and Intercités night trains need a seat reservation: a rail pass alone does not let you board.
  • France ↗Paris, Lyon and other large cities run low-emission zones that require a Crit'Air sticker on cars; check before you drive a hire car or your own car into a city.
  • France ↗Carry your passport or national ID card: police can ask for identification, and hotels register foreign guests.

Honfleur is a small Calvados port at the mouth of the Seine, 23 km south of Le Havre and 64 km north-east of Caen. The Vieux Bassin, the wooden Sainte-Catherine church and the Boudin and Satie museums sit within a 15-minute walk of each other, so the town is a half-day of sights plus a long evening. Most travellers sleep one night and pair it with Deauville, the D-Day beaches or a ferry at Ouistreham.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes; leave the car at the edge and walk in. Local buses and taxis cover the Côte de Grâce and the beaches. For Le Havre, Deauville or Caen you need a car, a bus or a train from a nearby station.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Deauville and Trouville-sur-Mer

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Car or bus south along the coast

Boardwalk, beach and a bigger choice of restaurants; easy half-day.

Le Havre

go

Door to door: About 30–45 min

Car over the Pont de Normandie, or bus

Rebuilt concrete centre, a UNESCO site; the bridge toll applies.

Bayeux and the D-Day beaches

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min to Bayeux

Car west via the A13

Too much for a comfortable return day; sleep in Bayeux or Caen.

Caen

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Car or train from a nearby station

Abbey, castle and the memorial museum; a full day.

Lisieux

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Car south-east

Worth it mainly for the basilica and the pilgrimage sites.

Arromanches-les-Bains

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Car west along the coast

Mulberry harbour remains; pair it with Bayeux rather than doing it alone.

Ouistreham

skip

Door to door: About 1 h

Car west

Mostly a ferry port; only useful if your crossing leaves from there.

Falaise

skip

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Car south

Castle of William the Conqueror; too far for a day from here.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Vieux Bassin and quai Sainte-Catherine

Harbour views and restaurants at the door; the noisiest and priciest rooms, and the oldest buildings.

Around Sainte-Catherine church (rue du Puits, rue Haute)

Two minutes from the church and five from the harbour; quieter, still walkable to everything.

Côte de Grâce and the town edge

Cheaper rooms and parking, 15–20 min uphill walk back from the centre; best with a car.

Watch out

Safety

A calm, small town; the real risks are pickpockets in the summer harbour crowd, uneven cobbles and a drink bill you did not ask about. Ask the total before you sit at a terrace.
  • Harbour-front restaurants have near-identical menus and the highest prices in town: walk one street back for better value.
  • Many kitchens close between lunch and dinner and on one or two weekdays; some close for part of January.
  • Parking in the centre is limited and paid; use the edge-of-town car parks in summer.
  • The Pont de Normandie carries a toll (about €5.10 (≈ US$6) for a car, check current rate).

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Honfleur. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Jun, Sep–early Oct · avoid Jul–Aug (crowds, peak room rates), Jan–Feb (some restaurants and museums shut) · month by month →
  2. 2 airports and 3 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 8 day-trips, door to door
  6. 4 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for DOL and the Paris airports: last bus and train times field-checked, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Vieux Bassin and La Lieutenance, Sainte-Catherine and the museums, the Côte de Grâce, the Jardin des Personnalités and the beach.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Sainte-Catherine bell tower, Boudin museum, Maisons Satie, Musée de la Marine, Naturospace) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Market-day fixtures (Wednesday and Saturday mornings) so gates A–D can go green.
