Flåm is a village of a few hundred people at the inner end of the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord, and one of Norway's busiest cruise ports. Almost everyone comes for two things: the Flåm Railway up the valley to Myrdal, and the boat through the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen. Both fit in a single full day. The village itself is compact and walkable, and the surrounding villages of Aurlandsvangen, Undredal and Gudvangen are within about 10 km.

Getting around

The fjord-side village is compact and flat: walk everywhere. The Flåm valley road up towards the church is a dead end with little traffic, and the upper valley and Myrdal are not open to cars. Bus, car or bike link Flåm and Aurland; Undredal is reached through a tunnel and cannot be walked or cycled from Flåm. Boats and the railway cover the fjord and the valley.

The Nærøyfjord is the UNESCO-listed narrow section, 18 km long and only 500 m wide in places.

Vangen church is the largest masonry church in the Sognefjord area. Stegastein viewpoint is best reached by vehicle.

The Stalheimskleiva hairpin road is closed to motor vehicles; the viewpoint plateau is private hotel ground.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are cold water and slippery fjord-side rocks, fast traffic on the E16, and steep, unmarked ground above the valley: stay on marked paths and tell someone your route.
  • Cruise-ship days flood the village: check the port call list and plan the railway or boat for a quieter day if you can.
  • The Flåm Railway and Nærøyfjord boats sell out in summer: book dated tickets ahead.
  • Stalheimskleiva is permanently closed to motor vehicles; it is open to cyclists and walkers only.
  • Route 50 over the mountains can close in winter weather.
  • Food and drink are expensive even by Norwegian standards; a supermarket picnic is the cheap option.
