Nassfeld

Go for 2–3 days of skiing or summer hiking. A day-trip from Villach or Klagenfurt is possible but rushed: stay overnight.

Nassfeld is a mid-sized ski resort in Carinthia, straddling the Italian border. In winter it offers 110 km of piste; in summer it becomes a hiking and swimming base. The resort is compact and family-oriented, with most accommodation within walking distance of the lifts. It works best as a 2–3 day stop, not a week-long base.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Austria ↗Austria is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Austria ↗Motorways and expressways need a vignette (digital or sticker); driving on them without one brings on-the-spot fines.
  • Austria ↗Winter tyres or chains are required in winter conditions; hire cars from outside Austria may not have them fitted.

Getting around

The resort is walkable if you stay in Tröpolach. A free ski bus runs between the villages and the cable car station in winter. In summer, a car or taxi is useful for reaching trailheads.

Watch out

Safety

  • Lift opening dates vary with snow: check the official website before booking.
  • Piste restaurants are mostly mediocre; the better options are in the valley or across the border in Italy.
  • The border crossing to Italy is open; bring your passport or ID card.
