Mesquite sits on the Virgin River at the Arizona–Utah corner, the only real town on I-15 between Las Vegas and St. George. It is a highway and casino town: three resort casinos, several golf courses, a free heritage museum, and fast food built for drivers. Most travellers sleep one night here on the way to Zion, St. George or Salt Lake City, or use it as a cheap, quiet alternative to Las Vegas resort prices.

Getting around

You need a car. I-15 exits 120 and 122 serve the town; the casinos, museum and restaurants are 1–3 mi apart along Mesquite Blvd and Pioneer Blvd. Local streets are flat and easy to drive, but there is no useful public bus for visitors and sidewalks are patchy outside the resort blocks. Taxis and rideshare exist but are thin — book ahead if you are drinking.

Safety

Mesquite is a small, low-crime town and feels safe at night around the resorts. The real risks are summer heat, long empty desert drives, and drinking on the casino floor with no plan to get back to your room.
  • Summer heat: July and August afternoons regularly pass 40°C (104°F); carry water and do not leave anyone in a parked car.
  • Casino floors are 21+; keep ID on you even if you look well over the age.
  • Non-US visitors who win big at slots or tables may face a 30% IRS withholding on winnings — keep the 1042-S form to reclaim it.
  • I-15 through the Virgin River Gorge has sharp curves and can be foggy or icy in winter; drive it in daylight if you can.
  • Distances are long: the next town northeast is St. George, 30 mi; southwest is Las Vegas, 80 mi. Fuel up before you leave.
