Wareham, MassachusettsWareham
Give Wareham one night, two at most: it is a car base for Onset beaches and the canal, not a sightseeing town. Skip it without a car.
Wareham sits at the head of Buzzards Bay, where the Cape Cod Canal meets the mainland, and calls itself the gateway to Cape Cod. It is a spread-out town of villages — Onset, East Wareham, West Wareham — with a beach, a summer baseball team and a commercial strip on Route 6. Almost everything worth doing is a short drive away, so treat it as a base for the canal, Onset and the cranberry country, or as a cheaper stop before the Cape.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical way around: the villages are 5–15 min apart and buses are limited. GATRA's Onset–Wareham Link runs Monday–Friday and Saturday daytime only, so plan around it or drive. I-195, I-495 and Route 25 meet here, which is why Wareham works as a stop between New Bedford and the Bourne Bridge.

- Route 6 (Cranberry Highway) is a strip-mall highway with fast traffic and few crossings: drive between stops rather than walking it.
- Many motels, beach businesses and cruises are seasonal; confirm dates before booking a winter trip.
- Summer weekend traffic on Route 25 and I-195 toward the Cape can add 30–60 min; cross the canal before mid-morning or after 19:00.Summer weekend traffic on Route 25 and I-195 toward the Cape can add 30–60 min; cross the canal before mid-morning or after 7:00 PM.
- Ticks and poison ivy are real in the woods and bog edges from spring to autumn: check yourself after walks.
