Bagenalstown (Muine Bheag, "small thicket") is a small Barrow-side town of about 2,800 people in County Carlow, 75 minutes by train from Dublin Heuston and 20 minutes by bus from Carlow. It was laid out on a grid by Walter Bagenal, who talked of a Versailles-style town and never built it. What is left is a short main street, a canal and river, two Norman castle ruins and one paid garden. Most travellers pass through; a half-day or one night is enough.

Getting around

The town is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. For Leighlinbridge, Ballymoon, Ballyloughan or Shankill Castle you need a car or bike: the R705 and R724 are narrow and have no footway. The Barrow towpath is the safe walking and cycling route north to Leighlinbridge. No taxi firm is based in town, so a cab has to come from Carlow.

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are narrow roads with no footway, wet towpath stones and a river weir. Standard precautions, no areas to avoid.
  • No taxi rank in town: book from Carlow or plan around the train and bus times.
  • R705 and R724 have no sidewalk and carry fast traffic; do not walk them after dark.
  • Ballyloughan Castle ruins stand on private land: view them from the lane, do not cross the field.
  • Dunleckney Manor is a private home with no tours.
  • Mobile data is patchy: 5G from Three, weaker Eir and Vodafone signal.
