Wells-next-the-Sea is a small north Norfolk port town of about 2,200 people, wrapped by the Holkham Estate. The quay sits a mile inland behind salt marsh; the beach and its beach huts sit beyond a belt of pines. There is no National Rail station — you arrive by bus, car or the narrow-gauge heritage line from Walsingham. Two nights covers the town, the beach and Holkham; a third night buys you Blakeney, Walsingham or the coast path.

Getting around

The town is flat and small: quay to Staithe Street is 3–5 min on foot, quay to beach about 25–30 min on the off-road path. Buses are the only public transport — Lynx Coastliner 36 (King's Lynn, Hunstanton, Fakenham, Walsingham) and Sanders Coasthopper CH1 (Cromer, Sheringham, Blakeney), daytime Monday–Saturday with fewer Sunday and bank-holiday runs. A car makes Holkham, Blakeney and the villages far easier; parking at the beach fills early in summer.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are the tide and the roads. Check tide times before walking the beach or the marsh paths, and take care on the unlit A149 and narrow lanes after dark.
  • No National Rail station: the nearest are Sheringham and King's Lynn, both reached by bus.
  • The beach car park and the narrow town streets fill by mid-morning in July and August.
  • The Wells and Walsingham Light Railway runs roughly April–October and not every day: check before you plan around it.
  • The sea goes out a long way over mud and sand: check tide times and never walk out on a falling tide.
  • Mobile signal is 4G only, and Three has no coverage here; download maps before you arrive.
