Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!

Stop 30–60 min at the Trans-Canada rest area and the village sign, or sleep one night if you are driving Québec City to the Gaspé; skip it as a destination.

Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha! is a village of about 1,300 people on the Trans-Canada Highway in the Bas-Saint-Laurent, roughly halfway between Rivière-du-Loup and the New Brunswick border. It is known for its name — the only place name in the world with two exclamation marks — and for the roadside photo stop. There is no reason to base a trip here, but it is a natural break on a long drive east.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

You need a car. Route 185 (Trans-Canada) runs through the village; there is no useful local bus, and the nearest rail and bus links are in Rivière-du-Loup and Cabano. Fill up before the long empty stretch east.

Lake beaches, a small museum and the best cluster of food and beds near the village.

Ferry to Charlevoix, whale-watching boats and a proper town centre.

A handful of motels and B&Bs; book ahead in summer, walk-ins are not reliable.

20–25 min east; more beds, restaurants and lake access.

Rivière-du-Loup

About 1 h west; a real town with hotels, if you want services.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the drive — moose at dawn and dusk, winter ice on Route 185, and long gaps with no fuel or phone signal. Keep the tank above half.
  • Moose and deer on Route 185 at dawn and dusk; the highway is two lanes with passing sections.
  • Winter: snow tires are mandatory in Québec from 1 December to 15 March.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the Témiscouata stretch; download offline maps.
  • Most restaurants and motels close or cut hours outside summer.
