  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.

Cantona is a walled city on a lava-field plateau in eastern Puebla, built from about 600 BC and abandoned around 1050 AD, when it held tens of thousands of people. What survives is unusual: at least 27 ballcourts, raised platforms, and a grid of paved causeways radiating to the edges of a 12 km² site, of which roughly 1% has been excavated. It sits just off MEX-140D between Puebla and Xalapa, so it works as a half-day stop on that drive rather than a destination in itself. There is no shade, no water and no restaurant; the museum and shop at the entrance are the only facilities.

Why go

  • The largest known ballcourt complex in Mesoamerica — 27 courts counted so far, on a fortified lava-field plateau.
  • A paved causeway network and raised platforms you walk yourself, with almost no other visitors on weekdays.
  • A small site museum with finds from the excavations, plus a gift shop for replica pieces.
  • One of the few big Mexican ruins where you are not queuing behind a tour group.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The entrance, museum and shop are reachable on paved ground with short walks.
  • The plaza stairways, ballcourts and causeways are rough and unshaded; not suitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Do not touch or move carved stone; report damage to site staff.
  • Take all rubbish out with you — there is no collection on the plateau.
  • Hire a local guide at the gate so the surrounding villages earn from the site.
  • Visit on a weekday and spread out along the causeways to keep pressure low.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Cantona?

About MXN 90–100 per adult in 2026, paid at the gate; students, teachers and seniors with ID usually pay less, and Mexican nationals and residents enter free on Sundays. There is no advance booking for individual visitors.

What are the best hikes in Cantona?

There are no mountain trails — the walking is on the site itself. The ballcourt circuit (1.5–2 h, easy), the climb to the central plaza and main pyramid (45 min, moderate) and the causeway walk to the site edge (1–1.5 h, moderate) together fill 3–4 hours.

When is the best time to visit Cantona?

January to March and October to November: dry, clear and mild. April and May are hot and hazy, and June to September brings afternoon rain, slick stone and more mosquitoes.

Do I need a car to get to Cantona?

It helps. The site is about 2 hours from Puebla on MEX-140D, exiting at the Caseta Cobre Cantona toll booth and driving 7 km north. By bus, take Autobuses Via from Puebla's CAPU terminal to Oriental (about 90 min) and then a taxi for the last 18 km.

How long should I spend at Cantona?

Plan 3–4 hours on foot for the plaza, ballcourts, causeways and museum. Add the 4-hour round trip from Puebla, so it is a full day out.

Is Cantona crowded?

No. It is far less visited than Teotihuacán or Chichén Itzá, and weekdays outside Mexican holidays you may see only a handful of other people.

Are there facilities at Cantona?

A small site museum and gift shop near the entrance. There is no restaurant on site and no other shops nearby, so bring water and food.
