Can PicafortCa'n Picafort

Give Can Picafort 2–3 nights if you want a flat beach base with a bus to Alcúdia; skip it if you want an old town or nightlife — that is Alcúdia or Palma.

Can Picafort is a resort strip on the Bay of Alcúdia, 60 km northeast of Palma, part of the Santa Margalida municipality in the Pla de Mallorca. It is sand, low-rise hotels and a 14 km beach that runs north into Alcúdia's Playa de Muro. The draw beyond the beach is the Talayotic burial site at Son Real, a 3 km walk from the nearest road. There is no old town here: the town grew from a fishing shack in the late 19th century, and it still reads as a beach base rather than a sightseeing town.

Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Spain ↗Spain is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Spain ↗High-speed trains have airport-style baggage screening at the station and boarding gates that close a few minutes before departure: arrive early.
  • Spain ↗Carry your passport or ID: police may ask for it, and hotels must register every guest's document.
  • Spain ↗The Alhambra in Granada and the Sagrada Família in Barcelona sell timed tickets that sell out weeks ahead in season; book on the official sites before you fix your dates.

Getting around

The town is flat and walkable end to end in about 25–30 min. TIB buses 324, 325 and 315 run along Ma-12 from Alcúdia; 324 goes every 15 min via the beach strip, 325 hourly and continues to Cala Rajada, 315 continues to Sa Pobla. Bus 302 links Palma via Inca, Sa Pobla and Alcúdia, but you may not ride it only within the Alcúdia–Can Picafort section. Eight car-rental agencies sit near the big hotels, and several shops rent bikes.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime resort town; the real risks are sea conditions along the open 14 km (8.7 mi) beach, heat on the unshaded Son Real walk, and rental scooters or bikes on the Ma-12 main road.
  • Bus 302 cannot be used for the Alcúdia–Can Picafort hop alone; take 324 or 325 instead.
  • Son Real necropolis is about 3 km (1.9 mi) from the nearest road access — no shade, carry water.
  • Talaiot de ses Llenques is on private land with nowhere to pull over on the highway.
  • Many hotels and beach bars close outside roughly May–October; check before booking a winter trip.
  • The beach is the southern extension of Alcúdia beach: currents and no lifeguard cover vary along the 14 km (8.7 mi) strip.
