Arviatᐊᕐᕕᐊᑦ
Go only if you have a reason to be on the west Hudson Bay coast: two nights covers the town, the historic sites and a bird sanctuary run.
Arviat is mainland Nunavut's southernmost community, on the west shore of Hudson Bay and under an hour by air from Churchill, Manitoba. It is a working Inuit town of about 2,900 people, not a resort: there is no hotel strip, no bar and no road in. You come for the tundra, the bird sanctuary, two national historic sites and the aurora, and you book flights and beds before anything else.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
Arviat is small and flat; you can walk the centre in 15–20 minutes. Local taxis run between the airport and town for about $7 and are the usual way to move with bags. There is no car rental and no road out of town; for the bird sanctuary and the historic sites you go with a local guide or outfitter, by boat or snowmobile depending on season.

Watch out
Safety
- Arviat is a dry community: alcohol is prohibited and possession can lead to arrest.
- There is no road access; everything arrives by air, so flights cancel in bad weather and you may need a buffer day.
- Winter wind chills are dangerous; frostbite happens in minutes on exposed skin.
- Do not approach wildlife, and never leave food outside.
- Distances on the land are deceptive: go with a local guide, not alone.
