Give Brooks one night as a fossil base for Dinosaur Provincial Park; skip it if you are not going to the park.
Brooks is a town of about 15,000 on the Trans-Canada Highway, 188 km east of Calgary and roughly the same west of Medicine Hat. It exists on the traveller map for one reason: Dinosaur Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage badlands site 48 km northeast, where the interpretive tours run May to October. The town itself is a service centre for oil, gas and beef processing, with a compact motel strip on 2 Street W and a handful of restaurants. Come for the fossils, sleep one night, move on.

Getting around
You need a car. The town is small enough to walk between the motel strip and downtown, but Dinosaur Provincial Park, Kinbrook Island and the Brooks Aqueduct are all outside town with no useful public transport. Highway 876 northeast of town carries heavy truck traffic: avoid it and use Highway 873 and 544 for the park.

Safety
- No car means no park: taxis exist but a return trip to Dinosaur Provincial Park is expensive and hard to arrange.
- Summer afternoon thunderstorms are common; badlands trails turn slick and there is no shade.
- Highway 876 northeast of town is a truck route: take the longer signed route to the park instead.
- Park interpretive tours and camping are seasonal and capacity-limited: book ahead for May–October.
