Lismore is a village of about 1,350 people on the River Blackwater in north-west County Waterford, near the Cork and Tipperary borders. The castle itself is private, but its gardens open in season, and the surrounding countryside holds mansions, gardens and the Knockmealdown hills. There is no direct bus from the cities and no local taxi, so a car or a Dungarvan bus connection decides what you can see.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 10 minutes. Local Link bus 363/364 runs Monday–Saturday, roughly hourly, between Dungarvan, Cappoquin, Lismore and Tallow, with some buses continuing to Fermoy; the Lismore stop is by Rosie O'Dowd's West End Bar. There is no local taxi, so anything outside the village — the towers, the mansions, the Vee — needs your own car or bike.

Watch out

Safety

Lismore is a quiet, low-crime village and feels safe day and night. The real risks are narrow, wet country lanes, fast traffic on the N72 and river or hill weather that turns quickly; 112 or 999 reaches the Gardaí, ambulance, fire, coast guard and mountain rescue.
  • No local taxi: a cab has to come from Dungarvan, so plan the last bus or drive.
  • Lismore Castle is a private residence and is not open to the public; only the gardens and the arts centre take visitors.
  • Mount Melleray Abbey closed in 2025 and the monks moved to Roscrea: do not plan a visit.
  • Garden and house opening seasons are short (some only July–August or mid-August to September): check dates before you drive out.
  • Country lanes are narrow and often wet; walkers and cyclists share them with cars.
