Ven is a 4.5 km by 2.5 km island in the middle of the Öresund sound, between Landskrona in Scania and Denmark. It is known for Tycho Brahe's Renaissance observatory, Uraniborg, and for flat farmland, cycling and summer weekends that fill up. Almost everyone lives in Tuna By; the ferry lands at Bäckviken on the east side. Most visitors come for a day, and a day is enough for the observatory, the church and a loop by bike.

Getting around

Bike is the way: rent at Vens Cykeluthyrning near Bäckviken, from 120 kr, helmets free. A bus timed to the ferry runs between the two ends of the island and you can get off anywhere. The whole island is walkable in a day if you keep to one side. Golf carts and horse or tractor carts are also rented on the island.

Watch out

Safety

Ven is a low-risk island. The real hazards are bike crashes on shared roads, sun and wind exposure on the flat plateau, and arriving with no cash and no card that works.
  • No ATMs, banks or currency exchange on the island: bring a card, and cash only as backup.
  • Danish kroner is sometimes taken at par, which is a bad rate — pay in SEK.
  • There is no Systembolaget on Ven; the distillery sells by the drink only.
  • Summer weekends get crowded and ferries fill: book tickets ahead.
  • Some rough-looking bike paths are roads used by cars: ride on the right and wear a helmet.
