The Đồng Văn karst plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark on the Chinese border, is usually seen from the back of a motorbike on the Hà Giang loop. This is the walking alternative, not a copy of the loop: three days and about 40 km on village paths and quiet lanes between Hmong hamlets, stone-walled fields and limestone cones, joining the loop road only where there is no other way. It uses the loop's towns as bases, so you reach Đồng Văn by bus or with a rider and then put the bike away. Since 2025 the former Hà Giang province is part of Tuyên Quang province (check).

Taxi or motorbike from Đồng Văn, about 45 min; Đồng Văn is 5–6 h by bus or van from Hà Giang town.
Finish
Mèo Vạc town
Bus or van back to Hà Giang town, 5–6 h via Yên Minh; or join a loop rider for the return.

Water and food
- The plateau has almost no surface water; villages rely on rain tanks. Carry 2–3 litres and buy bottled water in Sà Phìn, Đồng Văn and near Mã Pí Lèng.
- Food between villages is thin: take bread, biscuits, fruit and nuts from Đồng Văn.
- Homestays serve dinner and breakfast; thắng cố horse stew and corn wine are local, but plain rice dishes are always available.
- Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc have cafés and noodle shops.
Gear
- Stiff-soled trail shoes; limestone is sharp and loose underfoot.
- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; there is little shade.
- Warm layer and rain jacket; mornings are cold above 1,000 m.
- Offline map with the route loaded; mobile coverage is patchy in the valleys.
- Photocopy of passport and the border-area permit.
- Cash; ATMs exist only in the larger towns.

Hà Giang loop by motorbike or car
The standard way to see the plateau: 3–4 days with a local rider. Pick this if you want to cover more ground.
Loop with a walking day
Ride the loop but spend one day on foot around Sủng Là and Sà Phìn, the first stage of this walk.

Questions people ask
How is this different from the Hà Giang loop?
The loop is a 350 km road trip. This is a 40 km walk inside its most dramatic section, from Sủng Là to Mèo Vạc, on paths and lanes. You still use the loop's towns and buses to get there.
Do I need a permit?
Yes, foreigners need a border-area permit for these communes, about ₫200,000–250,000 from the provincial immigration office in Hà Giang or through your hostel (check since the 2025 merger into Tuyên Quang).
Can I walk it without a guide?
It is legal, but paths are unsigned and hard to follow, and few people speak English. A guide for at least the first two days is worth the cost.
Where do I sleep?
Guesthouses in Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc, Hmong homestays in Pả Vi and around Sủng Là. Book ahead for October–November weekends.
Can I see the Nho Quế river up close?
Not on foot in this plan. The river lies about 800 m below the pass; boat trips in the gorge start from a landing reached by road from Mèo Vạc (check whether they are running).
