Ploiești is Romania's oil town, 60 km north of Bucharest and the country's second rail junction, so trains to Brașov, Moldavia and Transylvania all pass through. The centre is compact and walkable, with a handful of good museums and 19th-century mansions, but heavy 1943 bombing and later rebuilding left little of the old city. Use it as a one-night rail stop or a day trip from Bucharest, not as a base.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 20–30 minutes end to end. TCE runs buses, trolleybuses and trams; a single fare is 2.5 lei, payable by contactless card on board. Bus 2 links the two main train stations in about 20 minutes; tram 101 crosses the city south to north. Taxis and Bolt/Uber are cheap: a cross-city trip rarely passes 25 lei.

Safety

A safe, ordinary Romanian city by day and on the main streets at night. The real risks are unmarked taxis, unreliable bus timetables and summer heat; use ride-hailing and keep to lit central streets after dark.
  • Confirm the meter is running before a taxi moves, or book by app; a few drivers overcharge visitors.
  • Bus timetables are unreliable and some routes run rarely: allow slack or take a taxi.
  • Summer heat with little shade on the newer west side; carry water.
  • Some historic buildings stand abandoned or badly restored: look, don't expect a polished old town.
