Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
- Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
- Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
- Spain ↗Spain is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
- Spain ↗High-speed trains have airport-style baggage screening at the station and boarding gates that close a few minutes before departure: arrive early.
- Spain ↗Carry your passport or ID: police may ask for it, and hotels must register every guest's document.
- Spain ↗The Alhambra in Granada and the Sagrada Família in Barcelona sell timed tickets that sell out weeks ahead in season; book on the official sites before you fix your dates.
Llafranc is one of three coastal villages of the Palafrugell municipality in the Baix Empordà, a sheltered crescent bay with a small working port, a promenade of low white houses and a headland, Sant Sebastià, with a lighthouse and an Iberian settlement above it. It is quiet and family-oriented, walkable end to end in about 15 minutes, and it works best as a slow 2–3 night base with the Camí de Ronda coastal path linking it to Calella de Palafrugell and Tamariu. Come for the bay and the walks, not for a resort strip.

Arrive & move

Getting around
The village is small enough to walk: beach to port is under 10 minutes. The Camí de Ronda path runs to Calella de Palafrugell (about 20–25 min) and on to Tamariu (roughly 1 h 15 min, rocky in places). Buses link Llafranc with Palafrugell, the market town uphill, and from there to Girona and Barcelona. A car helps for Begur, Pals and the inland villages, but parking near the beach fills by mid-morning in summer.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: 20–25 min
Camí de Ronda coastal path on foot
Easier than driving; the path starts at the far end of the bay.
Door to door: 20–30 min
Car or taxi, via Palafrugell
Hill town with a castle and views; buses are limited, so check times.
Door to door: 25–35 min
Car via Palafrugell and the C-31
Medieval centre and rice fields; pair with the beach at Platja de Pals.
Door to door: 1 h 30 min–2 h
Bus to Palafrugell, then bus or car to Girona
Doable as a day, but the connections eat the morning; a car makes it easy.
Door to door: 1 h 15 min–1 h 45 min
Car over the Cap de Creus road
A long, winding drive in summer traffic; better as an overnight.
Door to door: 1 h–1 h 30 min
Car or bus via Palafrugell
Dalí Theatre-Museum; book a timed ticket in high season.

Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Passeig de Cipsela / seafront
Beach, bars and restaurants at the door; the priciest rooms and the noisiest in August.
Village lanes behind the promenade
Two to five minutes uphill from the sand; quieter, still walkable to everything.
Sant Sebastià headland
A handful of rooms near the lighthouse with sea views; you need a car or a 20–25 min uphill walk.
Calella de Palafrugell
The next bay along the coastal path, about 20–25 min on foot; more restaurants and a bigger beach.

Watch out
Safety
- Parking near the beach is limited and paid in season; use the Carrer del Nero or plaça Jaume I car parks and walk.
- The Camí de Ronda has rough, uneven sections; wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops.
- Many hotels and restaurants close or cut hours from November to March: check before booking a winter trip.
- Cala del Cau is reached by a steep, difficult path from the lighthouse; not for small children.
- Swim inside the marked bay; boats anchor close to the coves in summer.
