Oakville is a lakeside town of about 190,000 on the north shore of Lake Ontario, roughly 30 km west of Toronto. It splits into two walkable pockets, Downtown and Bronte Village, joined by Lakeshore Road and the waterfront trail. Sights are modest and spread out, so most travellers use it as a one-night stop on the Toronto–Niagara corridor or a day trip from the city. Two nights is plenty if you want the harbour, the museums and a Bronte Creek morning.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
Walking works in Downtown and Bronte Village, and parking is easy. Between the two, and for the QEW hotels, use Oakville Transit buses or drive; the two GO stations sit north of the lake, about 1.5 km from downtown Oakville and about 5 km from Bronte Village. Oakville Transit fares can be paid by exact cash or by tapping a Presto, credit or debit card; a fare covers 2 hours of unlimited travel on Oakville Transit and transfers to many GTHA systems. Transfers between GO Transit and Oakville Transit are free when you tap the same Presto, credit or debit card on both.
