Stornoway is the only town in the Outer Hebrides and the practical base for Lewis and Harris: ferry from Ullapool, flights from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness, and the island's shops, pubs and hospital. The town itself is a working port, not a pretty one, and two nights covers it plus the Callanish Stones. Almost everything except a filling station shuts on Sunday.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk. Bus W5 runs to the airport and out to Point; W1 and W2 cross town on the way to the north and west coasts, roughly a dozen services Mon–Fri and five on Saturday, none on Sunday. Car hire is the real answer for Lewis and Harris: Stornoway Car Hire, Stornoway Vehicle Hire and Car Hire Hebrides, all able to meet the ferry or airport. Taxis serve the airport and town.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are weather, single-track roads with passing places, and Sunday closures catching you without food or fuel. Mobile coverage is patchy away from town.
  • Sunday: nearly all shops, cafés and many pubs are shut; only Engebret's filling station and (since 2024) Tesco have opened. Saturday night drinking stops around midnight.
  • Ferries sell out in summer, including for foot passengers: book the Ullapool crossing ahead.
  • Book beds and car hire for June–August and for HebCelt in mid-July; both go solid.
  • Midges on still, damp evenings from June to August, especially near woodland and water.
  • Fuel up before heading far out on Lewis or Harris; stations are few and Sunday hours are limited.
