Banja Luka is the second-largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the administrative capital of Republika Srpska, the hub of the forested north-west region called Bosanska Krajina. It is a working city with a leafy main street, a Roman-era fortress on the Vrbas river and a continental climate with four real seasons. Most travellers pass through on the way to Sarajevo, Zagreb or the Una national park; the city itself is worth a day, and the river canyon south of town is worth a second.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Gospodska street, Kastel and the main square are within 15 minutes of each other. City buses run from the main square (lines 6 and 10 to the bus and train station, about 2.30 KM). Taxis are cheap; a ride from the bus station to the centre is about 10 KM. Nextbike stations are scattered around town, and the tourist office rents bikes at about 1 KM/hour or 15 KM/day (check).

Watch out

Safety

Banja Luka is generally calm and safe for visitors. The real risks are winter ice and snow, fast traffic on the main roads, and unmarked taxi fares: agree the price or use a meter before you get in.
  • The bus and train station is about 3 km from the centre: budget a taxi or a city bus, not a walk with bags.
  • Trains are limited: as of 2026 the only services are from Doboj (about 2 h) and Novi Grad, a few per day.
  • The airport is small with minimal services: eat before you fly and do not count on shops.
  • Winter brings snow and strong north winds; summer afternoons can pass 30 °C.
  • Many places take euros in notes only, and shops often lack change: ask for small bills.
