Martinsburg is a 17,000-person railroad town in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, on I-81 and on the MARC Brunswick line and Amtrak's Capitol Limited. Its draw is a compact historic downtown, an 1866 B&O roundhouse and easy road access to Harpers Ferry, Charles Town and Berkeley Springs. Most travellers pass through in a day or sleep one night on the way west.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: downtown, the roundhouse and the interstate hotels are 5–10 min apart by road. The Eastern Panhandle Transit Authority runs buses on weekdays from about 6AM to 9PM and weekends from about 8AM to 5:30PM, with fares around $1–3 (check current routes). Amtrak and MARC serve the 1997 station at 229 E Martin St.

Safety

Martinsburg is a small city with ordinary US street risk: downtown is fine by day, quieter after dark, and the main hazards are interstate driving in winter and unlit side streets near the station. Lock the car and keep to lit blocks at night.
  • MARC Brunswick line runs on weekdays only and in limited peak windows; check the timetable before you plan a Washington day trip.
  • Downtown is quiet after about 9PM; most late food is on the interstate strip.
  • Winter ice on I-81 and WV-9 is the main travel risk; summer afternoons can hit the mid-30s °C.
  • The roundhouse opens daily 9AM–4PM but asks you to call ahead for a visit; do not assume a walk-in tour.
