Żywiec is a small Beskid town of about 31,000, 85 km south of Katowice, known for its beer and for Lake Żywiec, the reservoir that flooded the old valley in 1966. The centre is a compact market square with a castle museum; the real draw is the water and the low mountains around it. It works as one relaxed night between Katowice and Bielsko-Biała, or as a base for beginner skiing and summer swimming.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Local buses link the centre with the railway and bus stations and the brewery. For the lake, the ski slopes and the villages you want a car, a bike or a taxi; regional trains stop at Pietrzykowice for the lakeside.

Safety

Żywiec is a low-crime small town; the real risks are cold water and fast-changing mountain weather, plus unlit riverside paths after dark.
  • Brewery tours have been suspended since the 2023 group reorganisation: check before you plan a visit around them.
  • The railway station is 2 km from the centre and has no lift or step-free route to all platforms: check if you have heavy bags.
  • Lake Żywiec is a working reservoir with variable levels and cold water; swim only at marked spots.
  • Mountain weather turns fast above the tree line; carry a shell even on a warm morning.
  • Rural buses thin out after early evening; check the last service back if you go out to the villages.
