Awka is the capital of Anambra State and one of the oldest settlements in Igboland, sitting at the centre of the old Nri civilisation. It is a working administrative and university city — Nnamdi Azikiwe University gives it a large student population — rather than a tourist town. Travellers come for the region around it: the Ogbunike Caves, the bronze-casting heritage at Igbo-Ukwu, and the markets and festivals of Igbo country. Plan one night, two if you want a full day for the caves.

Getting around

Tricycles (keke) and motorcycle taxis (okada) are the main way around; taxis and private cars also work. Fares are short-hop and cheap — agree the price before you get in. The Onitsha–Enugu expressway cuts through the city and is the spine for buses and long-distance travel.

Awka is a normal working Nigerian city, but Anambra State carries a security advisory in several countries — check your government's advice, avoid night road travel, and keep cash and phone out of sight in markets.
