  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Simpsonville is a fast-growing suburb of Greenville on I-385, about 20 minutes from downtown Greenville by car. Its draw is a small walkable Main Street with breweries and shops, a seasonal water park and cheaper chain hotels, not sights of its own. Most travellers use it as a bed base for the Upcountry and spend the days in Greenville, the mountains or the BMW and Peace Center circuit.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the city is spread out and I-385 links it to Greenville and Fountain Inn. Greenlink Route 601 runs a bus to Greenville Monday–Saturday; check current times. Downtown Main Street is walkable and bike-friendly once you park.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Small downtown with a rail depot and cafés; pair with the GSP airport run.

Woodruff Road and SC-14 by car

Mostly shopping and suburbs; only worth it if you are already heading that way.

Campus and the botanical garden; a half day, not a full one.

Spartanburg

go

Better downtown food and a small art museum; easy half day.

Walhalla, South Carolina

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

I-385 to US-123 through Easley

Gateway to the mountain lakes; too far for a rushed return day.

Anderson, South Carolina

caution

I-85 south to US-76

Lake Hartwell and a small downtown; go only with a specific stop in mind.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Grandview Drive (I-385 exit 27 area)

Chain hotels with free parking; best for one night with a car and quick highway access.

Fairview Road corridor

Hotels plus Target, Walmart and restaurants; walkable to shops but not to Main Street.

Downtown Main Street

Few beds; pick this only if you want to walk to breweries and coffee, and book early.

Watch out

Safety

Suburban and generally safe by US standards; the real risks are summer heat, traffic on I-385 and Fairview Road, and unlit roads with no sidewalk after dark. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Summer heat and humidity: plan outdoor time before 11:00 and carry water.
  • Sidewalks disappear outside downtown; do not walk along Fairview or Harrison Bridge Road after dark.
  • Rideshares are thin late at night outside downtown: book before you leave the bar.
  • Tornado and thunderstorm warnings are common in spring: keep weather alerts on.
