Camps Bay is a beachfront strip of restaurants, bars and guesthouses on the Atlantic side of Cape Town, under the Twelve Apostles. It is walkable end to end, has no train or metro, and is best used as a 2-night base for beach time plus a Cape Peninsula day, or as an easy evening out from the city.

Getting around

Walk the beachfront: Victoria Road runs parallel to the sand and most restaurants sit opposite it. There is no metro or train; use Uber, metered taxis or the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus for the city and peninsula. A car helps for Chapman's Peak and the Cape Peninsula, but you do not need one inside Camps Bay.

Watch out

Safety

Camps Bay is one of the safer-feeling Cape Town suburbs by day, but beachfront bag-snatching and car break-ins happen: keep valuables on you, not on the sand, and use Uber or a metered taxi after dark.
  • The Atlantic is cold (roughly 12–16°C) and the beach has no lifeguard cover at times: check flags before swimming.
  • Do not leave bags, phones or cameras unattended on the sand or in a parked car.
  • Walking back up from the beach to the upper slopes can take up to an hour: budget for a taxi at night.
  • Summer south-easterly winds can shut the beach for a day: keep a backup plan.
