Twillingate is a town of about 2,200 people on two islands off northeastern Newfoundland, reached by a causeway and Route 340. It calls itself the iceberg capital, and late spring is when the ice drifts past. Summer brings whale and seabird tours, a winery, hiking trails and a folk festival in late July. There is one hotel and a scatter of B&Bs and rental homes, so book ahead in peak weeks. A car is effectively required.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to move between Twillingate, Durrell, Crow Head and the trailheads; Route 340 runs the length of the island. The town centre is small enough to walk. There is no useful local bus service for visitors, so plan on driving or joining a tour that includes pickup.

Safety

Twillingate is a small, low-crime town and is safe for tourists. The real risks are coastal: cold water and slippery rocks, fog on Route 340, and long distances between fuel and help.
  • Book beds and boat tours early for the Fish, Fun and Folk Festival in late July and for iceberg season.
  • Icebergs are not guaranteed: they depend on the year's ice drift, so treat any sighting as luck.
  • Boat tours run weather permitting and can be cancelled at short notice; keep a spare half-day.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the outer roads and trails.
  • Distances between services are long: fill the tank in Gander or Lewisporte before the final leg.
