Marmaris is a package-holiday port on the Lycia coast, 100 km from Dalaman airport and about 90 minutes by coach from it. The old town and castle sit on a headland between two bays; the beach strip runs south to İçmeler. Most visitors come on all-inclusive deals, but independent travellers can use it as a base for boat trips, the Datça and Bozburun peninsulas, and the Greek island of Rhodes.

Getting around

Dolmuş minibuses are the main transport: flat fare in town, higher to İçmeler. The bus terminal (Otogarı) is 3 km north of the beachfront — take a dolmuş or taxi into town. Taxis wait at the ferry terminal and harbour. Walking works in the old town and along the beach strip.

Watch out

Safety

Marmaris is a busy resort and generally safe for tourists; the real annoyances are bar touts, overpriced drinks on Bar street and summer heat. Ask the price before you sit down, and keep an eye on your bag on crowded beaches.
  • Package hotels crank music until about 01:00; ask for a room away from the pool before you book.
  • Some hotels charge extra for the room safe and air-con — confirm what is included.
  • Do not buy tortoises or other wildlife from beach sellers; importing endangered species carries a heavy fine.
  • The amphitheatre is a modern reconstruction and has been closed; check before walking up.
