Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area; it sets its own entry rules and a Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland. Check Irish immigration for your passport.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, with no routine checks on the land border. Visitors who are not Irish or British must still meet UK rules (including the UK ETA where it applies) to enter Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Driving is on the left; rural roads are narrow with hedges and few passing places.

Letterfrack is a village of about 200 people on the N59 in Connemara, and it exists as a travel base rather than a destination in itself: Connemara National Park and the Diamond Hill trail start at the visitor centre in the village, and Kylemore Abbey is 6 km east. Two nights covers both without rushing. A car makes the difference between a stop and a stay, because the coast, the beaches and the Twelve Bens trailheads are spread along lanes with no useful bus.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

You need a car. The N59 links Letterfrack with Clifden (14 km west) and Leenane and Westport to the north-east, and the national park, Kylemore and the Renvyle lanes are all off it. Bus Éireann 423 runs about every two hours between Westport and Clifden via Leenane and Letterfrack; Citylink 923 runs Galway to Clifden with a few services a day continuing to Letterfrack. Both are usable for arrival and for one trip to Clifden, not for touring. Driving is on the left; the coast lanes are single-track with passing places.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Kylemore Abbey and Gardens

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive the N59 east about 6 km, then shuttle bus from the visitor centre car park

Allow 2–3 h for the gardens; the shuttle is included with entry.

Clifden

go

Door to door: About 20 min by car

Drive the N59 west 14 km, or Bus Éireann 423

Town for shops, a filling station and the Sky Road loop.

Leenane and Killary fjord

go

Door to door: About 25 min

Drive the N59 north-east about 20 km

Fjord views and a boat trip; combine with Kylemore on the same day.

Inishbofin Island

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min to the island

Drive to Cleggan, then the ferry

Ferries are weather-dependent and the island deserves a night, not a rushed return.

Westport

caution

Door to door: About 1 h by car, 1 h 40 min by bus

Drive the N59 via Leenane, or Bus Éireann 423

A long day out; better as a stop on the way in or out.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Letterfrack village centre

Walk to the national park visitor centre, pubs and the shop; the only place here where you can leave the car parked.

N59 west towards Dawros and Rosleague

Hotels and self-catering in gardens and woodland, 2–4 km from the village; you need a car for everything.

Kylemore and the Leenane road

Closest to the abbey and the road to Killary fjord; quiet at night, nothing within walking distance.

Renvyle and Tully Cross

Coastal lane north of the village, B&Bs and a hotel; sea views, 10–15 min drive to Letterfrack.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a village of its size; the real risks are weather on the hills, single-track roads and driving after a long day. Tell someone your route before hiking and carry waterproofs.
  • No filling station in the village: the nearest is about 6 km east on the N59, so fill up in Clifden or Westport.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G only; 5G has not reached this area, and signal drops in the glens.
  • Diamond Hill and the Twelve Bens are exposed quartzite: wind, rain and low cloud arrive fast, and paths get slippery.
  • Mountain rescue is called out here regularly for walkers in trainers and jeans; carry a map, waterproofs and a charged phone.
  • Many B&Bs and hotels close from November to mid-March; book ahead and confirm opening dates outside summer.
  • Single-track lanes: pull into a passing place to let oncoming traffic through, and expect sheep on the road.
