Chetwynd is a town of about 2,500 in the foothills of the Rockies, the first place eastbound drivers reach after the Pine Pass on Highway 97. It is a stop, not a destination: over 120 chainsaw carvings spread through the streets, a small heritage museum, and four provincial parks and two lakes within an hour. Most travellers sleep one night and continue to Dawson Creek or Tumbler Ridge.

Getting around

No public transit. The town is small enough to walk between the downtown core and the highway frontage roads in 15–25 minutes, but a car is needed for the museum, the community forest and everything nearby. Highways 97 and 29 meet in town.

A small, quiet town; the real risks are winter highway conditions, wildlife on the road at dusk, and long distances between services. Ask about posted prices before you sit at a bar.
  • Winter driving on the Pine Pass (Highway 97 west) can close without warning: check DriveBC before you commit.
  • Fuel and food gaps are real on this stretch: fill up in Chetwynd before heading north on Highway 29 or west into the pass.
