Ludlow is a small walled town on the River Teme at the south edge of Shropshire, 13 miles from the Welsh border, with a Norman castle, a large parish church and streets of medieval, Tudor and Georgian buildings. It is a walking town: the station is half a mile north of the centre and everything worth seeing sits inside a 15-minute radius. Most visitors come for one night and treat it as a food stop, a base for the Shropshire Hills, or a break on the Cardiff–Manchester rail line.

Getting around

Walk. The old centre is compact and partly steep, with the castle and market square at the top and the river at the bottom. Local buses 701 and 702 loop the north and south of town hourly Monday–Saturday, and the Park & Ride (bus 732) links the A49 junction with the centre hourly Monday–Saturday. Taxis are few: book ahead for early trains.

Safety

Ludlow is a low-crime small town and safe to walk at night; the real risks are uneven pavements and steep lanes, fast A49 traffic if you walk from the Park & Ride, and river levels on the Bread Walk after heavy rain.
  • The station is half a mile north of the centre and the walk back is uphill; allow 10–15 minutes with bags.
  • Sunday bus service is very limited: check times before relying on it.
  • Several restaurants close on Sunday and Monday evenings; book dinner ahead.
  • Castle and church hours change with the season and for events: check the official sites before you travel.
  • Race days at Ludlow Racecourse close the B4365 (≈ US$6,000) across the track.
