Red RiverRed River, New Mexico

Give Red River 2 nights if you ski or ride; 1 night is enough off-season, when the lifts stop and half the town closes.

Red River is a one-street ski town at 2,650 m in a canyon of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, population about 484, on the Enchanted Circle loop road between Questa and Eagle Nest. Winter is the reason to come: a small ski area, snowmobiles, cross-country trails. Summer brings hiking, trout fishing and cool nights. Everything sits within a 15-minute walk of Main Street, so you park once.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Walk. The town is one street, roughly 2 km end to end, and the ski base is on Main Street. A car is needed for the Enchanted Circle, Carson National Forest trailheads and Wild Rivers. In winter NM 38 can ice up and close in storms; check road conditions before driving in.

Watch out

Safety

A small, low-crime resort town; the real risks are altitude, winter roads and off-season closures. Tell someone your trail plan and carry water.
  • Altitude: town sits near 2,650 m. Expect headaches and poor sleep on night one; drink water and skip alcohol.
  • Winter driving: NM 38 and the Enchanted Circle can be icy or closed during storms; carry chains or have all-wheel drive.
  • Off-season closures: after the ski area stops spinning, several restaurants and lodges shut for weeks in spring and again in November.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in the canyon and on forest roads; download maps before you leave Taos or Questa.
  • No lift-served skiing without a pass: buy online or at the ticket window, and check the snow report the morning you go.
